Live Show: Joon debuts "What's A Bluff" live at The Echo.

What’s A Bluff is the newly-released debut album by singer-songwriter, Joon. magSCENE had the honor to cover the album’s live performance at The Echo. Supporting the show was pryme!.
Entering the stage dressed in all black, Joon starts his set off with “Country,” a stripped back, yet electronic introduction to the album. With the grand entrance setting the scene for us, Joon kicked forward into the setlist performing singles, “Tellme” and “Take Time,” with a guest appearance from bixby that garnered explosive cheers from the audience.
Continuing on, Joon followed the album’s track list by performing a new song, “So I Guess.” Unbeknownst to the crowd, starfall also made a guest appearance on the stage. The crowd screamed in shock as the pair performed “Maybe a Dozen,” roaring even louder as bixby came back to bring them in for a group hug.
After the song, Joon left the stage. Confused at first, I soon realized the atmospheric music playing was an interlude for the album. Featuring classical elements, “We Should Probably Move” created an interesting contrast to the first half of the show - preparing us for something to unfold.
The interlude came to an end. Joon returned to the stage - this time dressed in a white, button-down shirt. Performing three new songs - “Metaphor,” “Come True,” and “Green Needle” - back-to-back, Joon showed us the growth in his craft as he interacted with bandmates on stage. The performing band was composed of Noah Koslen, Charlie Tilton, Darren Lee, and Zach Sommerfeld. They locked in and added their personality and flair to the live performance of these songs. A heartfelt and intimate moment between Joon and the crowd occurred during “Green Needle,” as the softer, acoustic song was blessed by fairy lights created by the crowd’s phone lights. Ending the album’s portion of the setlist with “Patience (Love You More)” and saxophone-accompanied “Pressure To Breathe.” Joon finished the set with additional tracks, which included “with ease,” “a little more honest,” and “nervousness.”
The show was a phenomenal experience - all thanks to the hard work of those on Joon and Pryme!’s teams. A fun night full of love and gratitude that should continue to be celebrated as we ring in the album’s release today.
After having the chance to listen to “What’s A Bluff,” I was able to draw more conclusions. Recalling the outfit change mid-set, not only was this a change in costume, but a sonic shift in the album. Moving from songs that were a bit more electronic in nature, we were met with songs that embodied more live-sounding elements. This proved the development in Joon’s sound even more to me. If the first half of the album could be compared to being lifted up into the sky, then the second half was the moment your wings found balance, allowing you to soar through the sky.
